Beginner Readers

Note about beginner readers:  Here at the Hahnschoolers we are very generous about what "counts" as reading.  My goal is to encourage readers and reading related activities.  If my toddler looks through a picture book that is a pre-reading activity.  If my pre-reader sits down with a stack of books and faithfully looks through each one, we count that as reading.  It helps her to develop a love of books and an understanding of how books work and that pictures tell a story.

For this challenge, please be generous towards your beginner readers, let it count.

Amelia's Bio

Hi , My name is Amelia and I am 10 years old. My birthday is July 5th. I have 2 parakeets, One named Passion Fruit and the others named Dove. Currently my favorite foods are apples and Chicken wings.  One of my favorite book series is Warriors.

I also like writing books myself. One book I am writing is called "The Three Moons". It's based in the world called Allendgood. I love writing about my book. There are so many good things in Allendgood.

I really like apples! I eat apples every single day. My favorite apple is "cosmetic crisps". That's all you need to know about me.

The Hahn Schoolers First Annual Winter Reading Challenge

You and your family are invited join us for our first annual Winter Reading Challenge .  The reading challenge will last the whole month of March, during which time participants will track the titles of the books and how many pages read. There will be two categories:  independent readers and beginner readers .  Participants will update us via email or text, and we will track each participant's progress and update the blog with the results.  Read the most pages and win the prize!

If you are interested in joining us, on this merit based reading challenge, please send the entry fee of 5 dollars per child to the address provided in the letter version of this post.  The money will be used to purchase 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for each category. The goal is to have fun, encourage friendly competition, while improving our reading and writing skills. We would love to have you join us .

Rules:

1.  Audio books/parents reading aloud to you count.  (check out the blog and podcast: readaloudrevival.com for more encouragement and information on the magic of reading aloud.)

2.  Independent readers are encouraged to read to younger siblings, but please don't count board books towards your total pages.

3.  It is up to the parent's discretion to determine which category of reader the participant falls into.  Beginner readers are still in the process of learning how to read, it's not the level of books so much as it is based on the processes of reading.  Beginners are still sounding out words and working towards developing fluency. Independent readers have achieved a level of fluency and confidence in their reading ability.  They are more fluent and less dependent on assistance during the reading process.

4.  Please have grace with us, your hosts, as we work out the kinks in our reading challenge as we go.  This is our first time leading one.

Steps to participating:

   1. Sign up via email or text.  Please include your name, age, and whether you are an Independent Reader or a Beginner Reader. (If you do not want your first name to be published on the blog, please include your first name and an allis that we can use instead.)

    2.  Please send the $5 entry fee to Mrs. Hahn.

   3. Each week record the titles and pages read, then submit them to the blog by Thursday so that we can post the results (via the email that we provide).

4. For audio books please report the minutes listened and the will count towards your pages read total at a rate of .65 pages per minute in either pages. (Through the magic of math, we will do the conversion for you.)

5.  At the end of the month we will tally up the total pages read for each category and announce the winners!  There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.

6.  Optional:  If any Readers would like to contribute to the blog, they can submit book blurbs, personal favorite book list, a personal bio or any book related contribution for review and publishing.

Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have regarding the challenge.  We are learning as we go.

Happy Reading! Love the Hahn Schoolers

The Bio of Hannah

I am 12 years old and my name is Hannah.   If you know me, or have read my Book List (which I implore to do if you have not all ready) you know that I like a wide variety of books from post-apocalyptic to the classics.

THESE ARE SOME FACTS ABOUT ME:

My favorite school subjects are art, history, and outdoor wilderness survival.

Here are some of the activities I am involved in: each week I go to youth group, ice-skating, and archery .
I have many pets. My cat's name is Buck and my chicken's name is Onyx and I have a fish named Sushi because why not .
I  love many books, but at present I am reading Keeper of the Lost  Cites and Harry Potter.

I really hope you like the Reading Chalenge because it was a large part of my schooling and may the best reader win!

                          Sincerely,                                                                     Hannah
